When you google spirituality, the quote that comes up is: “Spirituality is a concept that involves finding meaning and purpose in life.”

Social media claims spirituality is an idea related to finding God. “Do I believe in God?” is a question I often ask myself. I do pray and go to temples, but is it only because my mother says so, or is it because of a feeling in my mind and heart that drives me? Up until I was a teenager, I was quite against the idea of praying and believing in the real idea of God. Ironically enough, before every nervous situation, I would say, “Bhagwan, please bacha lena…” And my atheist friends would agree to this.

Then there were these turn of events that shaped your 20s, the events that define your personality.
You realize suddenly you don’t like to have fake friends in the count of double digits, and two people who get your heart are sufficient.
You realize that the boy who rejected you in college has a personality you could never be friends with.
You realize that you might have been rude to many people in your life, and the present you would go and apologize for being mean to people.
Suddenly, you think coconut water makes you feel more alive than the vodka cocktail.
You like dancing on the beach more than you like dancing in the club.
You are actually attracted to the person who would be an unproblematic parent to your child.
Instead of blaming your parents for not allowing you to go for a night out, you understand where they were coming from and how far they have come to raise you to the person you are.
You realize how you were neglecting your health and blaming your body for not being kind to you. Well, guess what? You find yourself taking care of your body.
You become friends with your siblings after having some very distant years in adolescence.
You understand how your words have significance, and you choose to speak sweetly to people.
You realize how fixing your own insecurities could be of favor to your relationships instead of breaking up every time you see an issue.
You realize how less significant your distant relatives are, who have been nothing but unsupportive every time you were dealing with body disorders.

And I am pretty sure, as I grow old, there will be new nuances to my personality that are yet to be explored. I might be a different person. So this idea of navigating through life is spirituality, where you find peace in everything God has blessed you with instead of complaining about the things you don’t have. This control of what and when you need to learn is something driven by some force somewhere in the universe, which aligns your energy as per the personality you are getting shaped into.

To be able to find the relevance with God with respect to my religion is that when I think of the idea of Hinduism, it is the idea of Karma, an indeed beautiful concept that is beyond caste, racism, greed, power, etc. It’s simply the idea of doing good to get good. No, that does not mean your cycle of Karma ends when you get pain and suffering. It’s the person you become when you deal with the pain is the Karmic cycle you are part of. The universe has a plan, and we need to trust it, not when we inflict pain on others, but when our hearts has no intention of causing pain to anyone around us.
So, remember to be modest in your bad times and grateful in your good times to make your karmic cycle whole.
